Getting Started in Practice

We enter a discipline like Zen practice so that we can learn to live in a sane way….It is down to earth and very practical… It is about our daily life….It is something we do for a lifetime.

Charlotte Joko Beck, Everyday Zen

Coming to the Center for the first time?

We love it when people come by and check us out, so please feel free to attend any of our scheduled sittings. You don’t need to call ahead. Wear comfortable clothing and please try not to wear scents since some people are sensitive. There are chairs on the deck and extra cushions and sitting benches. You can use them however you wish. Just come in and sit in whatever position is comfortable for you; Our sittings are usually no longer than 35 minutes and if you need to move during that time, please feel free to change your positions. We just ask that you don’t get up and move around the zendo during the sitting period. Between each of the sitting is a walking meditation during which time you can use the bathroom. We also have a short service. You can join in or just observe. After sittings, join us, if you like, for tea, cookies and socializing.

Although practicing with others at a center close to you is very helpful, it is possible to develop a strong and sustaining Zen practice from a distance by coming to retreats and keeping contact as much as is possible. Many of our long-distance members play vital roles in the running of our Center.

Beginner Instruction

Beginner Instruction is offered every Saturday from 10-10:45am When we are not in retreat or closed. Please call ahead at 510-596-3087 and leave your name and telephone number so that we can reach you if there is a change in time. Wear comfortable clothing. You are welcome to stay for the lecture from 11-12 if you like or you may leave after the instruction.
